RAIPUR: "Should I repay loan with cheque of Rs 81 or go and commit suicide to rid of this disgusting cheque and the load of debt both?" asks a distressed farmer at a village in Surguja district has suffered loss of crop on his four acre of land amounting to Rs 1 lakh.

Surguja district administration paid this farmer a relief compensation of Rs 81 via a cheque for his losses caused due to heavy rain and hailstorms occurred last month. Already debt-ridden and drought-hit, this farmer is in shock and feels helpless among others who too have got cheques worth Rs 100 to Rs 1000 as relief for loss.

A tribal farmer Jairam hails from Chermunda village at Lundra in Surguja district and has been among those worst affected in loss of crops after a very bad hailstorm and unseasonal heavy rainfall in February.

Talking to TOI over phone, Jairam said, "Tehsildar sent me this cheque of Rs 81 as compensation, what do I do with this, commit suicide? I have a loan of Rs 1.2 lakh from banks add to that Rs 1 lakh loss of my crops on four acres of land. My onions, grains, mustards all were immersed under one feet thick layer of hailstorm. I got the details of losses registered at revenue department and ateam had come to village for inspection. But they didn't visit the spot, they just spoke to farmers. And what we got after that is this cheque."

On what parameters was the assessment done Jairam has no clue but when he asked about the petty amount the Patwari, he was told " jitna bataya utna mila" (you got how much you claimed for).
