Child health gets raw deal in India

High rate of infanticide and mortality call for social awareness and policy reforms

While India leaves no stone unturned in its unrelenting quest for global economic dominance, it would behove it to pause for a moment and address the issue of infanticide and child mortality. In this detail the cup can be seen as half empty.

A burning desire for male children in India, according to a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), sees the abortion of a staggering 700,000 female foetuses annually.

This is coupled with the fact that 25 per cent of children who are born are underweight at birth and 1.72 million infants die before they turn one, illustrating the need for some serious social awareness.

The numbers are chilling and have assumed significance since the World Health Organisation's (WHO) revelations that India's record of immunisation for children is worse than that of Bangladesh, Pakistan and even a few sub-Saharan African nations.

The authorities must pay particular focus on child health. They are, after all, the country's future.
