AHMEDABAD: Crimes like rape, abduction and abandonment of children have recorded a sharp spike in the state in the last couple of years. Data recently released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) highlights more than 70% rise in rape and abduction of minors, while there has been a jump of over 40% in cases of desertion.

According to the report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 'Crime in India 2013,' the state also registered overall increase of 59% in crime against children.

The number of rapes on children recorded in 2012 was 150. The figure jumped to 263 last year.

On March 30, a 15-year-old girl registered a complaint of rape against four persons. She told officials of the women police station that she was blackmailed with a video clip and forced to get intimate with three youths and a teenager several times over a period of two years. Police on Sunday arrested her tormentors.

On June 12, a 17-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly raping and killing a five-year-old girl who stayed in the same locality. Questioned, the boy admitted to have dumped the body of the minor in the luggage compartment of the bus in which he works as a cleaner. Cops found the girl's body tied up with ropes and bore several cut marks around her neck and chest. "It seems that the boy raped her and then killed her to hide his crime," said a Sola police official who is probing the case.

Such complaints have grown in numbers, especially in smaller towns. Police officials say there is another reason for the increase in such offenses. A senior Gujarat police official said: "The number of elopements of minor girls has increased. Often in such incidents, complaints of abduction and rape are filed by the girls' parents. We try to bring the girls back and counsel the underage lovers to address the issue," said a senior state police official.

The other worry for the Gujarat police is: 113 cases of child abandonment in 2013. This is a rise of 43% from 79 reported in 2012. The highest rise was reported in cases of rape and kidnapping.

In absolute numbers, the state ranks fourth nationally in child abandonment after Maharashtra (259), Rajasthan (226) and Madhya Pradesh (124).

As per the report, Ahmedabad reported the highest number of abandonments (24) followed by Rajkot (10). While no age-wise and sex-wise data is available in the report, the state police officials said that in most cases, the children are abandoned soon after birth. If they are lucky, they are found soon from the heaps of garbage or from near the hospital. Most of these cases are of girl children being abandoned.

On positive note, Gujarat reported reduction in number of foeticide and child marriage cases.

The north eastern region of the state reported 12 cases of child marriage in 2013 where the parents of the children were arrested.
