Korba/ Raipur (Chhattisgarh): The initiative, such as free distribution of textbooks, uniform, scholarship and Midday meal, taken by Chhattisgarh Government to promote education has enlivened hope of a better future, not only among the children but in their poor parents also who are working hard to make both ends meet.

When the students of primary school run in the slums of the city were told by their teachers that they would get new dress tomorrow, they were inflated with joy and enthusiasm.

As soon as the school closed for the day, they start running to their hutment to inform their parents, siblings, friends and neighbours the good news.

On the next day, the children who were usually hesitant to go their school and pinching their mothers by making several excuses so that they may skip the school got themselves ready early in the morning. Now, they have no time to waste, but make haste to reach school anyhow as early as possible.

As soon as they reached the school, they stand in the queue and got their new uniform. Now they are waiting for August 15-- the Independence Day, to wear the new dress.

This was the situation of the Government Primary School at Motisagar Para in Korba city, where 150 children study. Most of the families dwelling in the slums on the bank of the Hasdeo river, are economically very poor and earn their daily bread doing labour.

The Motisagar Para Primary School has also got the benefit of the scheme of free of cost school uniform of the Chhattisgarh government.

The children studying in this school have to tell different stories. Payal, a class V student, lost her father, but lives with her mother and two younger brother and sister, whereas, the parents of Prachi Bharti, Suman, Rajni, Lacky, Sikky and several other students are not only very poor, but are facing untold difficulties in running their families. As such, it was troublesome for them to send their wards to school.

In such circumstances, free distribution of textbooks and uniform from the government has lessened their burden. One of the students has mother only and she is working as domestic help. Parents of other children are working as labourers and some are chowkidars, halwai etc. Father of one girl makes shoes and sandals and earns daily bread of the family. The background of most of the children studying in this school is more or less the same.

Suman's father Sukhlal says that the demand of his child for new school dress was pinching his heart. All the children have the urge to go to school with new dress on August 15. Now, as they got new uniform just before the Independence Day, all of them are happy and overjoyed.
