Born in Parliament, the right to education (RTE) is now being nurtured by children who want to make it a reality in every part of the country. On Children's Day, students from different states related their struggles and successes in bringing their friends to school and teachers to the classroom. They demanded hygienic mid-day meals for students and also raised their voice against gender discrimination. These little activists from the villages of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh were in the city to inspire others and demand proper implementation of RTE Act.

Children's group leader Yashasvi Kumud from Bairagarh in Bhopal has been visiting schools in her area to find cases of gender discrimination. Her group is called 'Plus Minus Equals To' as the children wanted a mathematical name. Kumud, a class 8 student, said, "There was no playground in the government school in our area. While boys used a small piece of land on the premises to play, girls were not allowed to go there. The school authorities were not ready to give in even when the girls requested. Then we visited the school and tried convincing them. They finally agreed and allowed boys and girls to play on alternate days". Her group also made sure that girls were allowed to study science in school. "The teachers generally discouraged that earlier, as they thought girls would only end up making chapatis at home."

These child leaders represented groups from various projects supported by Child Rights and You (CRY). Eleven-year-old Azad, who is a member of the Mahatme Jyotibai Phule Bal Panchayat at Pindara in Varanasi, was instrumental in stopping exploitation of students by a teacher. "Our teacher would come out of the toilet and ask us to flush it for him," Azad said. He told the village elders and other child leaders about the teacher. Though the teacher initially denied the allegation, he was soon replaced. "The new teacher eats a lot of paan, sometimes 20 in a day. He sends students off to fetch paan for him while in school," Azad said.

In the same way, Gabbar Singh from Bharatpur and Padam Singh Sisodia from Udaipur districts of Rajasthan have taken up the responsibility of rousing the authorities. While many state governments are still going through the provisions of RTE, 17 of them haven't even framed the required rules and guidelines yet. "We have three rooms in our school and 138 children. There are no toilets and not even a boundary wall. We will now write to the SDM to sort this out," 15-year-old Gabbar said. Padam added, "There is no change in our school system even after one year of RTE."

Roli from UP's Koodha Muhammad Gadh, Gajala from Badepur, and Samrat from Delhi's Tughlaqabad area spoke about early implementation of RTE provisions. "There is no primary school within a radius of one kilometre in our area. Little children often get hurt while crossing roads to get to their schools. The right to education should become a reality soon," Samrat said.
