New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra has asked the National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commissions to move appropriate courts if their directives relating to protection of human rights and award of compensations are not enforced by the authorities concerned.

Addressing the 24th foundation day celebrations of the NHRC, the CJI lauded the sustained efforts made by the commission towards promotion and protection of human rights, saying: "It is doing an excellent job."

Because of its sustained efforts over the years, awareness about human rights has increased and so has the number of complaints registered with it, Justice Misra said.

The CJI said the range of human rights has been expanding and the NHRC and state rights panels should not hesitate to move the Supreme Court and high courts on violations if public authorities did not comply with their recommendations.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Justice H.L. Dattu, chairperson, NHRC, who is also a former CJI, said that by adopting human rights as a way of life, a fundamental change could be brought about to eradicate the scourge of poverty, ignorance, prejudices and discrimination based on sex, caste, religion and disability.

Justice Dattu highlighted various activities of the commission and the new initiatives taken as part of its endeavour to make people aware of human rights. In this context, he also highlighted the NHRC's Short Film Award Scheme, which has generated a tremendous response.

Justice Dattu said that in order to strengthen the human rights protection mechanism, the commission had further streamlined the complaint management system and expanded the scope of its activities to maximise its outreach.
