Sudha Sundararaman, General Secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), writes:

I am writing this on behalf of the women’s organisations which held a Press conference on Tuesday at the Indian Women’s Press Club in New Delhi in which representatives of seven women’s organisations were present, and two more were signatories to the statement.

Those present were: AIDMAM (Asha Kowtal, Deepika Shokeen); AIDWA (Sudha Sundararaman, Kirti Singh, Jagmati Sangwan); CWDS (Indu Agnihotri); Guild of Service (Mohini Giri, Sunila Singh); Joint Women’s Programme (Jyotsna Chatterjee, Padmini Kumar); NFIW (Gargi Chakravarty); and YWCA (Leila Passah). The AIWC and MWF representatives had endorsed the statement.

The national women’s organisations welcomed the report, and appreciated the hard work put in by the Verma Committee to bring it out in record time. They focused on the need for its urgent implementation, and released a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister petitioning the Government to act on the recommendations without delay. The importance of making budgetary allocations for this purpose was underlined. Some issues of concern, which had not been covered in the report, were also pointed out. These included the need for rehabilitation measures (long and short term), ensuring time-bound trials, and inclusion of aggravated assault with enhanced punishment as a category for perpetrators taking advantage of caste, class and economic power.

It is unfortunate that the report of the Press conference carried in The Hindu on Wednesday misleadingly captioned it “Women unhappy with Verma Committee report”. This gives an erroneous impression about the main focus of the Press meet. At a time when such a significant report has been prepared, due to the public outrage after the Delhi gang-rape, it is unfair to the women’s movement to give a distorted picture of their efforts to get the Verma Committee report accepted and implemented by the Government. We feel this should be remedied with a clarification. We request The Hindu to also carry the Press release/ memorandum addressed to the PM in its entirety.

****The Hindu regrets the misleading headline given to the news item. The memorandum can be read online at:thne.ws/14rLhiC
