The two-day state-level research and extension specialists workshop for kharif crops organized by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) was inaugurated on Monday. PAU vice-chancellor Dr MS Kang visited the exhibition of latest farm technologies that was put up on the occasion and released the publications 'Use of mat type nursery and transplanting machinery for paddy', 'Improved design and cost estimates of net houses', and 'Rainwater harvesting from rooftop for groundwater recharge' authored by PAU scientists.

In his inaugural address, Kang said agriculture is the strength of the economy of India and supports livelihood of over 68% of rural people.

It contributes nearly 20% to the national development. He added that the burgeoning population and non-sustainability of agriculture jeopardize efforts for food security. He further said climate change is a threat to food security.

As for boosting production level of different kharif crops, joint director, agriculture, Punjab, Dr Gursewak Singh, said the production targets for the forthcoming kharif crops have been set. He highlighted several issues confronting agriculture that include declining profitability, popularization of hybrid varieties for promoting yields, educating farmers about applying fertilizers based on soil test reports for maintaining soil health and diversification of agriculture by recommending crops that could form alternatives to paddy.

Giving details of research achievements, PAU director of research Dr SS Gosal said a new variety of desi cotton, FDK-124, had been recommended.

PAU best varsity

Punjab Agricultural University has been adjudged the best agricultural university of 2011 and bagged Krishi Shiksha Samman for making purposeful contributions in the field of agriculture. Out of 22 nominations from India, PAU was selected for Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards 2011 by a panel chaired by the secretary, ministry of agriculture PK Basu. Union minister of agriculture and food processing industries Sharad Pawar would give away the award to PAU vice-chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang on February 21. Dr Kang said it was a matter of pride for PAU that its excellent standards had been recognized at again. ''The university has played a vital role in ushering in Green Revolution,' Kang added.
