Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today came out in support of movements against corruption, but said that the rule of law alone cannot check corruption even as the relay hunger strike by supporters of Anna Hazare entered its fifth day here.

Admitting to corrupt practices in government offices, Gogoi said his government was taking action to check corruption, but the effort would be rendered futile if the public did not participate in the process.

“I hear about corruption taking place in the secretariat… right under my nose but nobody comes to complain. Both givers and takers of bribe are guilty. People have to be more active and vigilant against such practices,” he said during a function organised by the Assam PCC to pay tribute to former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi at the party headquarters here this morning.

Assam PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita and ministers Nilomani Sen Deka, Akon Bora and general secretary Haren Das also spoke on the occasion. Without referring to the ongoing Hazare-led fight against corruption, Gogoi supported the outpouring of emotions against graft but stuck to the party and the government’s stand on the issue.

“We have to pay to get either a birth or a death certificate. We are trying to improve the system by going for overall computerisation and effective monitoring, which will help check graft to a large extent. But there is still a lot to do and we are committed towards providing good governance. If you don’t like the government, change it through due process. But you cannot undermine the primacy of Parliament. Legislation alone will not help check corruption,” Gogoi said. Gogoi’s pledge to tackle graft coincided with the relay hunger strike by members of state unit of India Against Corruption, which completed its fifth day of support from students and prominent citizens.

General secretary of IAC (state unit) Pranjal Bordoloi said students from B. Barooah College, BMBB Commerce College, K.C. Das Commerce College, NEF Law College, Handique Girls College, Angels High School, Blue Bird High School, Amba Mahila Sanggathan and People Solidarity for Human Rights today visited those on hunger strike near Dighalipukhuri to show solidarity towards Anna Hazare.

Activists of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) staged a demonstration and sang patriotic songs in support of the movement.

KMSS leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, while addressing Hazare’s rally in Delhi, criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said the government must take steps to adopt the Jan Lokpal Bill and fight corruption.
