Chief minister Nitish Kumar dreams big. His latest wish is to boost the agricultural output of the state to such an extent that every person in this nation has at least one food item from Bihar on his or her platter.

“I want to take Bihar to the pinnacle. I dream of a day when every people in this nation will have at least one food item in their dish or kitchen from Bihar. The state government wants to give all kinds of facility to our farmers,” Nitish said, adding that the government has formulated a roadmap to attain this long-cherished dream.

The chief minister was speaking at the inauguration of a four-day district-level agricultural production-cum-machine mega fair, which began today on the campus of Bihar Veterinary College.

The mega fair was inaugurated by Nitish and agriculture minister Narendra Singh. Food and civil supplies minister Shyam Rajak was also present on the occasion.

Nitish said such programmes are bound to give a boost to the morale of farmers in the state.

He said: “There are huge scopes to boost agriculture in the state. The farmers need to utilise the opportunities in the best possible ways.”

He pointed out that the state government has charted a roadmap for the agriculture sector and it is planning different measures to encourage it. He said any suggestions in this connection are welcome.

“The biggest problem for farmers is unpredictable climate. If there is a lack of rainfall during the rainy season, then it becomes very difficult for them. I am in constant touch with agriculture scientists who are looking for alternatives which can help farmers if drought-like situation prevails. Focus is on producing crops which can grow even if the rainfall is scant. Climate change is the biggest obstacle in the development of agriculture sector and our government is looking into every aspect to solve the problem,” Nitish said.

Thousands of farmers from various districts in the state gathered to attend the fair. Farmers can buy machines like tractor, power tiller, carbine harvester, power thresher and pump sets from the fair at a 50 per cent subsidy announced by the state government. “The best part is that if the farmer does not want to take any loan from any bank and still wants to buy a machine, he is still eligible for the subsidy being given by the state government,” Nitish said. The chief minister handed over the starter of a power tiller to Chadravati Devi, a farmer, who bought the machine from the fair.

He also gave Rs 40,000 cheque to another farmer Jitendra Kumar Singh and Rs 60,000 cash to Kanti Devi, a farmer from Fatuha block. Addressing the farmers at the function, agriculture production commissioner A.K. Sinha said the state government is spending Rs 140 crore on agricultural machines and there is a growth of 35 per cent in the agriculture sector since 2005.

Minister Narendra Singh said: “Our state will create history in agricultural output. We want to create more opportunities for farmers because they are the backbone of development. No state can develop without the support of farmers. I will always be available for the farmers. If anybody has any trouble he or she can directly come to my house with the grievances.”

The agriculture minister said: “We want to maintain transparency in the agricultural sector and this is the reason why farmers have been given the opportunity to sell their foodgrain in the market directly, without any mediator. This way, they can get a good price of their hard work.”

The fair will be held across all the 38 districts of the state. After Patna it will be held in Nalanda district from December 18. Khagaria is the last district where the mega fair will be held.
