In an attempt to control the rising prices of rice and wheat, the State Government has decided to sell them at Rs. 17 and Rs. 14.70 a kg, respectively, through its cooperative societies.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies H. Halappa told presspersons here on Wednesday that each family coming under above or below poverty line categories was eligible to purchase 25 kg of these commodities at a time. Identity cards would have to be produced to purchase rice and wheat, he said.

Foodgrains would be sold through cooperatives and Janata Bazaars in district and taluk headquarters and small towns. The objective was to allow millers to directly deal with consumers, avoiding middlemen. This would also help reduce market prices, he said.

The State had a stock of 40,000 tonnes of rice and 61,235 tonnes of wheat. The Government purchased rice and wheat for Rs. 16.14 and Rs. 14, respectively, he said. Mr. Halappa said the cooperatives had been instructed to place orders with the Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation (KFCSC) for rice and wheat in their jurisdictions.

The Janata Bazaar has placed orders for 500 tonnes of rice. The subsidised foodgrains scheme would be launched in Chamarajanagar district in a few days. The KFCSC would open its outlets to sell foodgrains.

Stating that subsidised rice and wheat would not be sold in Bangalore on account of the model code of conduct in force for elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike council on February 21, Mr. Halappa said the department had organised “Akki Santhe” (rice fair) across the city last month and sold rice at prices ranging from Rs. 20 to Rs. 28 a kg.

He said subsidised rice and wheat would not be sold through ration shops as there were chances of diversion of foodgrains. Currently, BPL families were eligible for a kg of rice at Rs. 3 at ration shops, Mr. Halappa said.
