BHOPAL: Within hours after the Maoists abducted Chhattisgarh's Sukma district collectorAlex Paul Menon, a large number of people gathered at the district headquarters in tribalBastar region and they gave a call for a bandh on Sunday, demanding release if the young IAS officer.

Local tribals, traders and other prominent people from the small town had a meeting late in the night where they decided to appeal to the Maoists to release the district's first collector who they said was in fact working for the welfare and uplift the people the one of the most backward regions in the country. Sukma and Konta towns and other places in the district is expected to observe a bandh on Sunday.

Sources in Sukma town said those attended the meeting said they were ready to go into the forests to hold talks with the Naxalites regarding their demands and to secure the release of the 32 year old IAS officer of the 2006 batch. It is expected that the local tribals would hold rallies in support of the district collector.

The situation in Sukma is gradually emerging like that of February last year when hundreds of tribals in neighbouring Malkangiri district of Orissa held rallies and demonstrations for almost a week, pleading to the Maoists to release the then collector R Vineel Krishna.
