Communal incidents rose 17% last year from 2016 -Bharti Jain

NEW DELHI: Communal incidents across the country rose to 822 last year from 703 in 2016, reversing the falling trend seen in the preceding year. As many as 111 persons were killed and 2,384 injured due to communal violence in 2017, up from 86 killed and 2,321 injured in 2016.

In 2016, communal incidents were down from the levels seen in 2015 (751). The death toll in 2017 was the highest in past three years, as was the number of injured, according to data on communal violence over the past three years shared on Tuesday along with written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

Minister of state for home Hansraj Ahir informed the MPs that Uttar Pradesh saw the largest number of communal riots at 195, in which 44 persons died (around 40% of countywide deaths) and 542 were injured. Congress-ruled Karnataka recorded 100 incidents, 9 killings and 229 injured. Rajasthan was third most affected state with 91 incidents, 12 deaths and 175 injured, followed by Bihar with 85 incidents, 3 dead and 321 injured.
