Cuttack: Orissa High Court today directed the state government to constitute a high-level committee to check outbreak of jaundice in various parts of the state.

The division bench of Justice Indrajit Mahanty and Justice S.C. Parija issued the direction on a PIL. Giribala Behera, councillor of ward No. 4 of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, filed the petition seeking intervention for immediate measures to check spread of the outbreak in the city.

The court expected the chief secretary to head the committee with members from all concerned departments. The court also directed all urban local bodies and district collectors to extend the required support to the committee.

Behera, who is the Congress leader of Opposition in the municipal council, had stated that the situation in Cuttack city was alarming as more than 100 cases of jaundice due to contaminated water had already been detected at Jobra, Manglabag, Machua Bazar, Thoria Sahi, Nahak Sahi, Gamhandia, Pattapol and Sutahat.

"The court directed the authorities to ensure that jaundice was contained in Cuttack city and steps were taken to prevent contamination of water due to leakage of pipelines close to drains. The court also directed the state health secretary to file an affidavit stating the steps taken when the PIL was taken up after two weeks," petitioner counsel Kshirod Rout said.
