KANPUR: Murder over betrayal in love-affairs and relationships is one of the major reasons behind the soaring crime graph in the state.

According to a study conducted by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), as many as 28,145 persons were killed nationwide in crime of passions between 2001 and 2012. Uttar Pradesh accounted for nearly 4,200 of these murders. Andhra Pradesh leads the list with 4,901 killings followed by Maharashtra with 3,253 killings and Madhya Pradesh with 2,589 murders. According to a senior police official, "The trend is the same but the brutality in execution of crime has crossed all limits which is a relatively new trend. The city too has witnessed several brutal murders in the past few years."

He further said that during investigation, most of these cases were born out of over-suspected infidelity, extra-marital and failed relationships. In almost every other case, either of the spouses hatched the conspiracy with their lovers or paramours to get rid of their partner.

A female counselor accepted a spurt in cases related to marital disharmony caused by extra-marital affairs and pre-marital affairs. She also referred to a case wherein a 'Marwari' woman complained that her husband used to beat her up for making excessive calls from her mobile. "My centre has had cases where either the husband or the wife had accused their partner of infidelity," she added.

However, a senior police official at the IG (zone) office said, "Though there is no official record or survey in recent times apart from property dispute illicit relations too have been a major reason behind the rising crime graph."

The trend of murders over illicit relationships has increased in the last few years. The change could be attributed to changes in social values. Internet and mobile phones are few other major reasons behind the break-ups and failure of relationships and marriages. "We have come across cases wherein a person was found to be involved in multiple relationships. Its all due to easy and cheap availability of mobile phone and internet connection,""said a senior police official at the districts Crime branch office.

Additional superintendent of police Ram Kishun, who is supervising the investigation into the brutal killing of medical officer Satish Chandra Verma, said, "Such murders are on the rise not only in the urban but also in the rural pockets of the region. When any unidentified body is found, it is generally found that the person was eliminated by his or her spouse in a very brutal manner."

He said, "The height of brutality while executing the crime speaks volumes about the reason behind the murder. It is a known fact that murder over property or any other dispute takes place either at a public place or one's residence. But while killing the partner, the accused generally abducts the person and after sedating or poisoning kills him. They then dumped the body at some secluded spot."

"The accused when nabbed confesses before the police," he said.
