An officer of the 32{+n}{+d} battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary has filed cases of rioting, attacking government servants on duty, abducting a PAC sub-inspector, snatching a light machine gun from the PAC, and other counts, against about 200 unidentified farmers of Bhatta village.

The report has been filed after about two dozen farmers clashed with a PAC unit, late on Monday morning, and the PAC opened fire, injuring four farmers including a woman.

Meanwhile, official sources said the state government has also ordered an investigation into the entire incident by the crime branch of the state CID. The farmers have claimed that the PAC attacked the farmers, without any provocation, in order to suppress their agitation, demanding higher prices for their lands being acquired. They claimed the PAC unit fired well over a hundred rounds at the village, many of them directly at the villagers.

As reported earlier, there was a clash against agitating farmers and a PAC unit, with the PAC opening fire without the presence of any officers or magistrates at the spot.

On Tuesday, a farmers' leader told this correspondent, "There were only two dozen of us when the PAC came asking us to abandon our 'havan' and leave. It is amazing how they have now filed a case against 200 farmers. The aim is only to suppress our agitation."

Asked to comment, an official source said the "facts will come out in the CBCID inquiry."

Meanwhile, the farmers did not carry out their plans for their agitation on Tuesday. A farmer said, "We are looking after the six people we have in hospital."
