HYDERABAD: The joint operations taken up by the greyhounds wing of AP, CRPF andChhattisgharh police in the border areas took a curious turn on Tuesday with the AP high courtordering the police to produce five tribals before it in the wake of substantive allegations that they had picked up during combing operations last month and continue to be under police custody.

The bench comprising Justice KC Bhanu and Justice Kodandaram passed the order on a habeus corpus petition filed by Chandrasekhar of the AP civil liberties committee (APCLC). The petition, filed on April 1, had complained that five tribals from the border areas of Khammam district were being detained since March 20 after combing operations in the area by the Greyhounds forces.

However, the government filed a counter affidavit claiming the five tribals were free. They also produced photographs of the five men in the presence of local tehsildar on April 9.

At this stage, a local advocate filed an affidavit informing the court that the families of the tribals had been contacted and they were worried as they had not reached their homes for the last 35 days. He said that there were no cases against the five men and added that if the tribals were as free and healthy as seen in the photo, then the police could easily produce them court. After hearing the argument, the bench ordered for the five men to be presented and posted the matter to April 29.
