The Communist Party of India (CPI) will fight for according priority to the agriculture sector, and linking rivers within Tamil Nadu and in southern States, says its election manifesto that was released here on Wednesday.

Agriculture being the livelihood for 60 per cent of Tamil Nadu's population, the party would not only fight for according priority to this sector but also protecting farm lands, water resources and controlling the price of seeds, fertilizers and other agriculture-related inputs, the manifesto states.

It was released by the party State secretary D.Pandian at the CPI district unit office here following the announcement of names of the contesting candidates for the 10 assembly constituencies allotted to it under the AIADMK-led combine.

In the 24-page manifesto, the party said it would also continue its fight for the uplift of agricultural workers and village handicraftsmen. Besides taking up the cause of labourers, the party would strive for ensuring that labour welfare laws were implemented.

Reservation system

The party would press for reservation system in the private sector and work for mobilising financial resources for the smooth functioning of the labour welfare boards and increasing the benefits.

It said priority should be accorded for agricultural development and industrial production for which steps should be taken to increase power generation.

Improvements in government hospitals; eliminating the scope of political parties intervention in administration; initiating action against those politicians and officials who had amassed wealth in wrong ways misusing power; providing equal opportunities for women in all sectors and creation of a separate body to provide justice to oppressed communities against whom atrocities had been committed figure in the future agenda of the party, according to the manifesto.
