Polit Bureau discusses reports of West Bengal, Kerala State Committees on Assembly elections

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday reiterated its commitment to inclusion of the Prime Minister in the purview of the proposed institution of Lokpal.

Addressing journalists after the Polit Bureau meeting, MP Sitaram Yechury recalled that a law on Lokpal was something that the party was pursuing for 30 years since the Bofors issue came up. In fact it was at the party's insistence that a draft Lokpal Bill was brought before Parliament.

He said the Lokpal Bill was something that could only be decided according to the constitutional scheme of things by Parliament. Parliament alone could make a law. “The government can do whatever consultation it wanted but when draft comes before Parliament, political parties will take a position.”

Preliminary review

Mr. Yechury said the Polit Bureau heard the reports of the West Bengal and Kerala State Committees on the recent Assembly elections. It was a preliminary review of elections in these two and three other States. The Polit Bureau's view would be taken to the Central Committee on Saturday and on the latter would take a decision.

The Polit Bureau discussed the current political situation in the country and made certain proposals to the Central Committee. These included issues such as corruption, black money, price rise and food security. The form of action will be decided by the committee. The schedule of the next party Congress would be placed before the committee for discussion in the next two days. The Congress was overdue and it could not be held in April owing to the Assembly elections.

Physical attacks

The meeting took a serious note of the physical attacks on the party cadre in West Bengal. The party decided to organise protests against such attacks not only in West Bengal but all over the country, Mr. Yechury said.

Asked whether the former Kerala Chief Minister, V. S. Atchutanandan, would be included in the Polit Bureau, he said it was not on the agenda.

Thirteen of the 14 Polit Bureau members attended the meeting, while the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, did not make it. Biman Bose, Polit Bureau member, said Mr. Bhattacharjee's health did not permit him to make the journey to Hyderabad.

Ordinance opposed

In a brief interaction with media, Mr. Bose said the party opposed the promulgation of ordinance by the West Bengal government to acquire 400 acre of land in Singur to return it to farmers, as it was being done when the Assembly was in session. This land was earlier allotted by the Left Front government to Tata Motors for its Nano project.
