Kochi: Ten senior CPI(M) leaders including party general secretary Prakash Karat, Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan have approached the High Court of Kerala on Tuesday for quashing the criminal proceedings initiated against them by the Chief Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Thiruvananthapuram.

The court had earlier issued summons against the petitioners following a complaint filed by by Neyyattinkara P. Nagaraj, which stated that they had obstructed the movement of the public in relation to an agitation organised by the party.

The CPI(M) had organised a human chain from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram on October 2, 2009, against the Free Trade Agreement signed by the Union government with the Association of South East Asian Nations. In his complaint, Mr. Nagaraj pointed out that the meetings and procession had caused obstruction to the movement of general public and violated an earlier order of the High Court banning public meetings on roads and road margins.

However, the petitioners contended that the protest meeting against the policy of the government was recognised by law. They also submitted that organising the meeting and procession were part of the democratic process. The other party leaders who have approached the High Court included LDF convener Vaikom Viswan, Central Committee member P.K. Sreemathy, trade unionist Anathalavattom Anandan, party leaders M. Vijayakumar, Kadakampally Surendranand others.
