New Delhi: The CPM has challenged in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the recently introduced electoral bonds, alleging that it is a "ripe way" of ensuring all kinds of quid-pro-quo arrangements by the ruling party with entities whose identities will not be up for public scrutiny.

The matter came up for hearing on Friday and the Supreme Court issued a fresh notice to the Centre. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, decided to tag the matter along with another petition filed by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

While the ADR had moved court soon after the government announced the bonds in the 2017-18 budget, the CPM waited till the bonds to be operationalised.

The bonds were introduced on January 2 this year. The secrecy allowed to those who contribute to political parties through these bonds has been widely questioned as it goes against the tenets of transparency in political funding.

Briefing journalists on the petition on Saturday, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the "electoral bonds are nothing but legalisation of political corruption".
