Cry for Pehlu & all dairy farmers

New Delhi: Peasants from Haryana's Nuh region converged in the capital today to not only demand justice for Pehlu Khan - the latest victim of cow vigilantism - but also drive home the point that cattle trade was a matter of livelihood.

The mobilisation was part of the Bhoomi Adhikar Andolan and brought on the platform leaders of various parties, like the Janata Dal United, NCP, CPI and the CPM-L.

All of them were one in pointing out that while cow politics was being fuelled to polarise society, dairy farmers did not belong to any particular religion and that people of all faiths were being affected by the crackdown on cattle trade.

Khan was among five persons attacked by so-called gau-rakshaks (cow protectors) in Alwar, Rajasthan, while they were transporting milch cows earlier this month. The group, residents of Haryana, had bought two milch cows from a fair in Jaipur and were returning to Nuh when they were intercepted. Khan, 55, died of his injuries later.

Khan's aged mother Angoori Begum was present at the gathering today. She was helped on to the stage by relatives and was presented a cheque for Rs 3 lakh by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS).

Another cheque - for Rs 50,000 - was handed over for the treatment of Azmat Khan, who was injured in the attack a fortnight ago.

Today's dharna was preceded by a day-long protest at the same place by AIKS president Amra Ram to highlight the body blow being dealt to the livelihood of dairy farmers because of cow vigilantism. According to the AIKS, 26 per cent of the agrarian GDP comes from animal husbandry, while small farmers who hold land less than a hectare own 50 per cent of the animal wealth.

AIKS office-bearers said closing down cattle trade on the pretext of banning cow slaughter would affect around 30 per cent of the annual income of peasant households which were already in a debt trap.

Although the AIKS had hoped to get Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, the chief ministers of Left-ruled Kerala and Tripura, to briefly join the meeting as they were in town for the CPM's central committee meeting, the two did not put in an appearance.

Apparently, there was a view that it was best for the chief ministers to stay away from such a protest action as it could trigger a reciprocal agitation by the BJP in either state, particularly Kerala. Vijayan's native district Kannur has witnessed frequent clashes between cadres of the two parties.
