The family of newly-elected Dalit sarpanch of Bapora — village of Army chief VK Singh — has been ostracized for participating in election despite the village deciding to boycott it on ground that all major panchayat and zila parishad posts had been reserved for Scheduled Castes.

The ostracization has led to a situation in which the new sarpanch, a brick-kiln labourer and an SC, has been given armed security by the government immediately after he was declared elected unopposed in Monday's election.

The villagers have blatantly refused to acknowledge him as the village head and announced to snap social ties with his family, thereby effecting social boycott of his family.

They alleged he was a pawn in hands of the administration and had participated in the polls despite decision of the village to unitedly boycott the panchayat elections to protest the reservation of sarpanch and block samiti posts for SCs.

In a meeting held on Monday, the villagers declared that no resident would talk or have any relation with the family of the new sarpanch. The sarpanch, Bhoop Singh, has been nominated unopposed as no other villager filed nomination for the post.

According to information, the villagers had decided not to participate in the elections in a meeting on May 27, stating that the sarpanch's, block samiti members' and zila parishad members' posts had been wrongly reserved for SCs. They decided to approach the high court on the issue and filed a petition, whose hearing is fixed for July 26. Though 13 candidates had filed nominations for the sarpanch post and many others for the panch posts, all, but one candidate, withdrew the nomination papers following decision of the village panchayat. Villagers alleged that Bhoop Singh was influenced by district administration for not withdrawing papers and had gone into hiding. A villager said he had not been seen in village since May 27.
