Rajkot: Police inspector injured in violence triggered by a road accident, security beefed up in the area.

A month after three dalits were killed in police firing at Thangadh in Surendranagar district, a dalit youth was injured when police on Thursday opened fire to control a mob that went on the rampage in Sardar Chowk area of Junagadh city following an accident between a car and a Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation bus.

The injured youth has been identified as Sagar Solanki, who was travelling in the car involved in the accident. He has been shifted to Rajkot for advanced treatment.

Three police vehicles were damaged and an inspector, identified as Ghanshyam Zala, was injured allegedly after Solanki stabbed him.

Late evening, police were in the process of registering two cases of attempt to murder, one against the injured inspector for opening fire and and the second against Solanki and the mob.

Police said Zala might also be booked under the Atrocity Act.

According to police, Solanki already faces several bootlegging cases.

Junagadh Superintendent of Police Dipankar Trivedi said action would be taken once the FIRs were filed.

Initial reports said A Division police fired three rounds when the mob attacked policemen and their vehicles. A bullet reportedly hit Solanki in back of a thigh and pierced through all up to abdomen.

Security has been beefed up in Sardar Chowk and nearby Khadia area.

According to police, Solanki’s Maruti car collided with a GSRTC bus around 2.30 pm. While Solanki, supported by a mob, was allegedly beating the bus conductor, a police team passing by tried to stop them.

Police said Solanki took out a dagger from his car and threatened to hurt inspector Zala when the policemen fired two rounds. Solanki, however, was not deterred and tried to attack the inspector, who got a cut in his hand. The police then fired one more round, in which Solanki was hit.

On September 23 and 24, three dalit youths were killed at Than in Surendranagar district when police opened fire on a mob pelting stones. A case of murder was registered against a few policemen in the case following protests.

Dalits being targeted: Cong

AHMEDABAD: Criticising the police firing incident in Junagadh, the state Congress alleged that police were targeting dalits at the behest of the ruling BJP.

GPCC vice-president Girish Parmar, himself a dalit, said the police “do not seem to have improved themselves after the Surendranagar incident” and demanded action against the erring policemen.

Later, Parmar along with former MLA Shantaben Chavda rushed to Junagadh to take stock of the situation.
