NELLORE: At least five dalits were grievously injured at Ramapuram village of Tada mandal in the district when they were chased and attacked by upper caste landlords following a dispute over the festival of the village goddess on Monday.

In the mayhem that lasted for two hours, the landlords smashed the valuables of the panic-stricken dalits after forcing them to flee their homes. The tension spread to four villages around Ramapuram as the landlords there also joined in the assault. The injured were rushed to the government hospital in Gudur where the condition of two dalits was said to be critical.

According to information, Vanniyars (palli kapu), a dominant caste in Tada mandal, are the local landlords who dictate village politics and financial matters. The villagers traditionally celebrate the jathara of the local goddess Draupathamma by taking out the deity's idol in a procession through the main thoroughfares of the village. Recently, the dalits of Ramapuram demanded that the procession be routed through the dalit colony as well instead of only the main village. The vanniyars, however, opposed the demand, resulting in tension in the village.

When the matter reached the higher authorities, Gudur sub-collector Nivas and other police officials visited the village last week and brokered peace between the warring groups. As per the agreement, the procession was to be taken into the dalit colony on the last day of the 10-day festivities which began on May 3.

But on Monday, the vanniyars refused to comply with the agreement to take out the procession inside the colony and kept the idol of the goddess on the colony outskirts, asking the dalits to come there to perform pujas. They also threatened of serious consequences if the dalits persisted in their demand. However, a few dalit youth argued with the vanniyars and attempted to take the procession into the colony on their own.

Angered over the defiance, the landlords attacked the dalits and chased them into the colony. The vanniyars from four neighbouring villages also joined them in damaging TV sets, two-wheelers, furniture and assaulting the dalits. The entire colony consisting of around 400 families emptied out when the attack started. By the time the cops reached the sport, the vanniyars too had escaped. Gudur DSP Chowdeswari, sub-collector Nivas reached the village and monitored the situation.
