One lakh LIG/EWS housing units to be ready in three years

Delhi Development Authority vice-chairman G. S. Patnaik on Tuesday reaffirmed the Authority's intention to deliver one lakh housing units for low-income and economically weaker sections of society within three years. He said construction of 20,040 EWS houses using prefab-technology was progressing and he expected to deliver 8,000 of these units in 2012.

Mr. Patnaik said that 12,000 demand letters were issued for the 16,000 flats on offer in the DDA Housing Scheme-2010 and that the remaining 4,000 would be issued soon.

Mr. Patanaik also announced that digitisation of land records was being taken up in a big way and that a centralised record room was being set up by the DDA for preservation and upkeep of old and new records.

Laying emphasis on increasing green spaces in the Capital, the vice-chairman said a Golden Jubilee Park has been conceptualised in an area of 251 hectares on the banks of the Yamuna between Geeta Colony and the Old Yamuna Bridge as part of Yamuna riverfront development. The park will have an amphitheatre, plaza, information centre, exhibition space, food courts and children's play area.

A “Sensory Park” for children with physical and mental challenges is being designed to be created at Dwarka Sector 11. Phase II of the Yamuna Biodiversity Park, Neela Hauz, Northern Ridge and Tipla Valley are the new biodiversity parks being planned.

Mr. Patnaik said the review of the Delhi Master Plan 2021 was progressing and that 17 management action groups were vetting over 2,000 suggestions received from the public to improve the master plan. The DDA's sporting facilities, which its vice-chairman said were very popular with the public, are set to receive a further boost with two new sports complexes to come up in Dwarka and a football stadium with a capacity to seat 5,000 spectators.

Mr. Patnaik also said that construction of urban extension roads was receiving high priority. Four socio-cultural centres on the lines of India International Centre and India Habitat Centre have been planned with one at Dwarka Sector 13 awaiting clearance from the Delhi Urban Art Commission.

On the DDA policy for farmhouses, Mr. Patnaik said the matter continued to be under discussion at authority meetings. On why no housing for middle-income and high-income groups is being planned by the DDA, Mr. Patnaik said the focus right now is on providing housing for lower income groups.

A journalist at the press conference requested the DDA vice-chairman to facilitate better access for media persons with DDA officials. However, Mr. Patnaik was evasive on the request and, following a barrage of similar requests from other reporters, hurriedly left the press conference.
