Jaisalmer’s Jawahir Hospital caters to more than eight lakh people. Amid the second Covid wave, it has turned into a picture of negligence and apathy.

Jaisalmer: Known for its shimmering dunes and majestic forts, the city of Jaisalmer seems to have lost its lustre during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Little do the tourists who flock to the Golden City know that Jaisalmer’s health infrastructure is in a decrepit state a sad reality that the locals know all too well.

The city's district hospital is a picture of negligence and apathy, with a defunct ICU that serves as little more than a dump yard. Patients gasp and battle for their lives, while ventilators from the PM Cares Fund lie junked in a corner.

This is a hospital in coma.

VENTILATORS DEFUNCT, PATIENTS GASP

The Rajasthan government has been in overdrive to showcase its foresight and adeptness in managing the Covid crisis, doling out achievement figures and hailing its health services. However, a reality check on ground zero exposes the truth.

The litmus test is simple: if one wants to know about the health services of a district, visit the district hospital. The Jawahir Hospital caters to an area of 38,401 sq km populated with more than eight lakh people. It is supposedly the only lifeline for this parched region, which is almost the size of Haryana. On paper, it boasts a four-bedded Intensive Care Unit, 138 oxygen beds and a dedicated Covid ward. Desperate patients travel from far-flung rural areas, hoping for treatment.

What greets them is a Covid ward with mildewed walls and defunct medical equipment; 13 ventilators provided through PM Cares Fund lie unused, rusted and gathering dust. Attendants in the ward say they have never seen the devices in use. When asked if the ventilators are turned on and operated, Ragaram, a patient, gestures ‘no’ with his hand.

“I haven’t seen the machine being used in the one year since they got here. Never seen a patient connected to one. They (ventilators) have just been lying there,” Dev ji, an attendant, told India Today.

So, what is the reason behind the devices not being in use? Authorities claimed that the ventilators developed technical issues, while rats have nibbled the wires of a few.
