Delhi: 1,786 People Killed in Road Accidents in 2012

Delhi witnessed over 1,700 fatal road accidents in last year, a 13.26 per cent decrease from that of 2011, while strict enforcement saw maximum number of prosecution in drunken driving cases.

Delhi Traffic Police said the number of people killed on Delhi roads has done down significantly with the number hitting an all-time low of 1,786 in 2012. Last year, the number of fatal accidents reported were 2047.

The decrease is despite the city's population increasing by 18 per cent between 2001 and 2011 while the vehicular number saw an increase by 93.13 per cent.

"In 2012, there were a total of 1,741 fatal road accidents from which there were 1,786 fatalities. 6,792 people were injured in 4,786 simple accidents while there were 113 non-injury accidents. Compared to 2011, fatalities decreased by 13.26 per cent while number of accidents causing injuries decreased by 3.27 per cent," the annual report of Delhi Police said.

The number of prosecution in drunken driving cases also saw a significant jump with 23,829 people being prosecuted as against 18,073 people in 2011. Around 6,578 people were sent to jail, driving licences of 986 people were suspended and 16,705 were fined. Last year, the number of imprisonment was 2,869.

The report also said the city had 74,38,155 registered vehicles on March 31, 2012 which exceeds the combined vehicles registration of three cities of Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said the traffic police handled several VVIP visits this year and several processions.

He said the prosecution of those driving two-wheelers without helmet went up to 3.29 lakh and of pillion riders without helmet up to 57,931. Over 3.13 lakh people were prosecuted for not wearing seat belt in cars.
