NEW DELHI: Hundreds of patients, including those requiring emergency treatment, were turned away by Delhi’s top public hospitals on Friday, the second day of the strike called by resident doctors protesting against the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill.

A 14-year-old girl, who had come to Safdarjung Hospital with chest pain, wasn’t admitted into the emergency ward. “The doctors said my condition was not life-threatening and asked me to come later,” she said.

Another woman, Renuka Devi from Nangloi, was seen arguing with the guards at the hospital to gain entry. When the guards didn’t relent and told her that that no doctors were available, she took her ailing husband, an accident victim, to another hospital in a PCR van.

A similar situation was witnessed at AIIMS, RML, Lok Nayak and other government hospitals. “Poor patients are getting affected in the tussle between the doctors and the government. If the issue is not resolved, many may die as not everyone can afford treatment at private hospitals,” said Ashok Singh, a resident of Laxmi Nagar who couldn’t get his child treated for very high fever.

The emergency departments and ICUs at many hospitals were being managed with the help of faculty members, pool officers, other medical and surgical departments, while OPDs, radio-diagnosis and laboratory services were functioning on a “restricted basis”. Routine surgeries were cancelled and only emergency cases were catered to at several facilities.
