NEW DELHI: Increase in vehicular traffic and rampant encroachment of pavements have left very little space for pedestrians in the capital. Most of the government initiatives have been hanging fire while experts insist that the capital badly needs pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

Many Delhiites who attended the second Raahgiri Day on Sunday also said the government should plan urban infrastructure keeping pedestrians and cyclists in mind. "I would love to walk to the local market, but there's hardly any space. Footpaths are either encroached upon by street vendors or have cars parked on them, and it is unsafe to walk on roads. People are forced to use private vehicles even for short distances," said Kishore Sharma, a businessman who came from Rajouri Garden with his family.

Many participants said the event let them walk freely in Connaught Place. "It is impossible to walk here due to heavy traffic. For a change, it is great to see Inner Circle crowded with people. There was so much space when we used to come to CP with our parents. But today hawkers have encroached upon pavements," said Kanika Gehlot, a housewife who had come from Dwarka with her two sons.

While her sons were busy skating, she walked around with an old friend whom she met at the event, organized by NDMC and Delhi Police along with Embarq India and supported by The Times of India.

There has been a growing demand for safer infrastructure from residents welfare associations as well. "We have approached the civic agency to get the pavements cleared. There are so many schools in my area and children living nearby can easily walk down. But due to haphazard parking and encroachment of pavements, they are forced to take either a cycle-rickshaw or an auto," said Sarita Gupta, a resident of GK-II.

Urban planners say the master plan, which is under review, should include options for pedestrians. "People will walk or cycle if there is infrastructure and vice-versa. If more and more people opt for sustainable public transport, the government will be forced to provide adequate infrastructure," said Amit Bhatt, head of transport at Embarq India.

S K Lohia, former joint secretary in the urban development ministry, agreed. "Globally it is seen that business has picked up in markets after pedestrianization," said Lohia, who has been pushing for pedestrianization, especially of city markets.
