The Delhi Government today slammed municipal bodies for "failing" to contain spurt in dengue cases which inched close to 1,000 and directed them to take "urgent" steps before the situation goes out of control.

A meeting of Delhi Cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, expressed "grave concern" over rising dengue cases and told municipal bodies to "pull up their socks" to avoid the worst.

"The entire Cabinet was of the view that the municipal corporations are lacking in a result oriented approach in dealing with the situation," Dikshit said.

The Cabinet felt the city may have to face an "unmanageable challenge" if urgent steps to contain the disease were not taken. With today's 36 cases, the total number of cases have risen to 985 in the capital.

"The Cabinet asked the corporations to pull up their socks and take urgent necessary steps to avoid the worst," a statement issued by Chief Minister's office said.

Although Health Minister A K Walia has been holding regular meetings to monitor the ongoing situation, the Cabinet feels that the BJP ruled three civic bodies have not been implementing decisions taken at the meetings, the statement said.

"It was also felt that the corporations have failed in their primary responsibility of cleanliness and sanitation ...The corporations have been told to take it as a wake up call," the statement said.

The Cabinet was of the view that the situation may become "horrible" if the civic bodies continue to show negligence in tackling the challenge, it said.
