NEW DELHI: Parents spend their lifetime caring for children, but how are they cared for on getting old? A multi-city survey on perception of the youth about elderly abuse and care reveals that while 73% of working adults accept the problem few are willing to act.

Delhi fares the worst with 92% youth not willing to act followed by Chennai (64%), Hyderabad (45%), Ahmedabad (41%), Bengaluru (37%) and Mumbai (35%). The survey was carried out in 200 households selected from 20 middle and upper class localities in 10 cities.

Manjira Khurana, country head of HelpAge India, said financial reasons were the most perceived factor for elderly abuse, though 'attitudinal and relationship issues' also had a role to play. "In our previous surveys on elderly abuse, research showed the main perpetrators were son and daughter-in-law," she added.

The findings were reflected in the views of many elderly people present during the release of the survey report at India International Centre, New Delhi. "Children have no time to talk. My son and daughter-in-law are busy with work while grandchildren are occupied with their mobile phones. We feel isolated at home," said a senior citizen.

A retired civil servant, said he spent most of his savings in buying a house for the family and children's education. "Today, I feel helpless when I ask them money for small things because they often refuse," the 76-year-old said.

Rebecca Mammen, a Supreme Court lawyer, said in today's fast-pace world where everyone is struggling to make ends meet it is wiser to first secure oneself and the spouse financially then spending all savings on family. "I am not saying that you should not spend your money on children. But make sure that you save enough to meet own needs," she said.

Many elderly members said that the abuse is not limited to the house alone. "Youngsters do not know how to respect, forget about caring for the elderly. They need to be sensitized about responsibilities," said a 63-year-old woman.
