NEW DELHI: From this week, people can register complaints of mobile phone thefts, forgery and petty disputes with Delhi Police over the phone. Other than starting a helpline to register such complaints, police also plan to have a helpline for people from the northeast states and for foreign nationals.

These measures were announced by police commissioner B S Bassi, as part of the modernization plans for Delhi Police, on the celebration of the force's 67th Raising Day on Sunday.

"The four-digit vigilance helpline will allow people to file cases related to non-cognizable offences without having to go to a police station. It will be launched in a few days," Bassi said. He added that people will also be able to register complaints of theft and forgery on Delhi Police's website.

The Raising Day was also attended by Union minister of state (home affairs), RPN Singh, who took a salute from the different wings of the force, including the commandos and the SWAT team.

Singh also inaugurated an exhibition organized by Police Families Association, which is headed by the commissioner's wife, Sunira Bassi. While addressing the force, Singh said, "There should be friendly relations between police and the public. Citizens should be able to approach police without hesitation".

Bassi added that emphasis will also be laid on keeping students from the northeast states safe in the capital. Apart from introducing a dedicated helpline where they can register their complaints, cops also plan to give priority to these cases. "The helpline for foreign nationals, which was a 10-digit helpline, will be converted to a four-digit one so that people can remember it easily," a senior police official said.
