Delhi schools hint at hiking fees to cover EWS students' costs

Several schools in the capital have said that they would cover the cost of providing education to students from economically weaker sections (EWS) by hiking the fees of other students, making their parents bear the cost of teaching EWS children.

According to the Right To Education (RTE) provisions, it is necessary for all schools to reserve 25% of seats for providing free education to children from EWS backgrounds. Several Delhi schools have said that the fee hike this year would be more than the annual 10% increase. The details regarding the fee hike are still being worked out.

Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely however has refuted the claims by the schools, saying that no fee hike would be permitted.

Principals of around 100 schools had met the education minister to discuss the new nursery admission guidelines. The guidelines had not mentioned anything about the reimbursement of the EWS fee by the government and schools are expecting the government to issue a circular regarding the matter soon.

Principal of Apeejay School in Pitampura, D.K. Bedi said that the implementation of the EWS quota up to 25% of seats would effect the fee structure for other students. "But we will come up with the new fee structure only in February or March after the matter has been taken up by the management committee," he said.

Principal of Springdales, Pusa Road, Ameeta Mulla Wattal said that the issue of the reimbursement of EWS fees had been raised by the principals but the schools will wait till the guidelines have been issued.

Once the criteria for admission have been issued to the schools by the government, the schools will be allowed to decide the fee structure in February. However, several schools might announce their fee structures in the January-March cycle itself.
