Over 1,800 people have been affected by the virus, according to the municipal corporation’s last report.

Overnight showers in the capital has prompted the Union health ministry to issue an advisory to the Delhi government on Saturday to “intensify” measures to check mosquito-breeding, while warning of a further spike in dengue cases.

The advisory stated, “In view of further rain predicted by the weather department, there is a possibility of water stagnating in containers and disposed plastic and junk material. This could give rise to breeding of Aedes mosquitoes. It is advised that vector-control measures be intensified to contain the problem of dengue. You are requested to instruct all officials and departments concerned to intensify the efforts.”

Experts said the Aedes Aegypti mosquito — which transmits the virus to humans — breeds in clean water. In view of this, municipal corporations increased fogging activities on Saturday. Authorities also said teams have been deputed for fogging from 7 am on Sunday.

According to the MeT department, 21.6 mm rainfall was recorded at the Safdarjung observatory on Saturday, while Palam and Lodhi Road observatories recorded 29.6 and 22.6 mm respectively. The minimum temperature recorded at 8.30 am was 26 degrees Celsius, one notch below normal, and the humidity level was 100 per cent. The weatherman has predicted more rains over the weekend.

With four more people succumbing after displaying fever-like symptoms with low platelet count, the death toll from dengue has risen to 20. The Delhi government has so far confirmed that 11 people have died of the virus, while municipal corporations reported five deaths in the last report on September 12.

“After hospitals report cases, the diagnosis of dengue has to be verified. This takes some time. According to health ministry guidelines, only ELISA-confirmed antigen and antibody tests are being treated as dengue cases,” said an official from the Delhi health department.

Over 1,800 people have been affected by the virus, according to the municipal corporation’s last report. While Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain had said that daily reports of dengue cases and deaths would be prepared by the government, the reports are yet to be released.

Meanwhile, the Health ministry has directed all hospitals under the Centre to not deny treatment to any patient suffering from fever or who show dengue-like symptoms. It has asked hospitals to increase their bed strength to accommodate more patients.

“The ministry has been extending the required technical and financial support and assistance to the states to manage dengue. It will continue to do so in order to strengthen them and address the recent upsurge,” said Union Health Minister J P Nadda.

An inquiry has been set up to look into reports of delay in treatment of children diagnosed with dengue at Safdarjung hospital, due to which the parents of a five-year-old boy were allegedly forced to shift him to a private hospital where he died later.

The Union health ministry had also sought a report from the Delhi government on the death of seven-year-old Avinash, who died of dengue two weeks ago after allegedly being denied treatment by private hospitals.

MCDs launch fumigation drives

New Delhi: Municipal corporations on Saturday launched fumigation drives in various parts of the capital. The South municipal corporation also added 100 new fumigation machines to its fleet of 340 and also hired 700 personnel for the dengue-control exercise.

The East municipal corporation also launched a ‘prevention against dengue’ drive which will cover all municipal schools. “Our target is to sensitise students, teachers and staff who will then educate family members and check mosquito-breeding spots around their houses,” said East corporation Mayor Harsh Malhotra.
