With the detection of fresh cases of dengue fever every day, the state capital seems to be falling in the grip of the infection. Altogether, 132 cases have been reported from different parts of Patna till date.   “Though the disease has not yet taken the shape of an epidemic, the situation may take an ugly turn if health authorities fail to initiate steps on a war footing to annihilate Aedes mosquitoes, the carrier of dengue virus,” state Indian Medical Association (IMA) honorary secretary Dr Rajiv Ranjan.

He, however, advised patients and their attendants not to panic for the infection was self-limiting and would pass off smoothly. “But one needs to remain watchful and must consult doctors if there is high fever and severe back pain,” he added.

President of the association Dr Arun Kumar Thakur opined that the strain of the virus attacking the patients did not seem to be lethal and could be well managed like any other viral fever. He, however, said that the secondary infection ought to be avoided as in that case the patients might sink into dengue shock syndrome, which is a dangerous condition.

According to him, the government should immediately arrange platelet separating machines, for the blood component would be urgently required to manage haemorrhagic dengue fever.

“We are not taking any chance. If patients report with strong dengue symptoms, we readily admit them for observation,” said Dr JKL Das, head of the department of medicine, Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Head of the department of medicine, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Dr RR Choudhary advised that if the symptoms continued for a couple of days, then the patients should go for a thorough investigation to rule out dengue infection.

“Normally, we don’t advise for hospital admission unless patients report with serious symptoms like persistent high fever, acute headache and pain in the backbone,” he said.

On the other hand, health administration and the civic bodies have miserably failed to rise to the occasion. There was hardly any measure taken to eliminate the carrier mosquito, nor steps were initiated to clean the city.
