They are known to enjoy the privileges, but even the railways was not prepared for what essentially was a technical error on their part. Forced to board a second class AC compartment in the capital-bound Patna Rajdhani after the railways could not arrange for an additional first AC rake, 18 MPs from Bihar created a ruckus at Mughalsarai junction on Tuesday night. As a result, the train was stuck at the station for 20 minutes.

CPRO (east central railway) Dilip Kumar confirmed the incident. "The MPs had spouses with them. We had accommodated six MPs along with their spouses - a total of 12 in the first AC. There are a total 22 berths in AC first class and 16 berths were already booked by passengers. We could provide AC first class berths to six MPs, while their spouses and the rest were accommodated in AC second class," said a railway ministry official.

"The MPs did verbally lodge their protest but there was nothing more to the incident," the official added. Top officers denied that the MPs threatened the railways officials by telling them that they would raise the issue in Parliament as it was a breach of privilege.

The MPs from Bihar later lodged a protest with the railway minister, who on Wednesday ordered "strong action" against concerned officials.
