New Delhi: Poor diet and low education levels among women contribute to high levels of stunting among Indian children, nutrition researchers said on Friday after the first-ever district-level study of stunting nationwide.

The study by the International Food Policy Research Institute has found that low body mass among women, low levels of education among women, and the diet of the children themselves are, in that order, the strongest factors influencing stunting among children.

Stunting levels in Indian children below five years vary dramatically, from 60 per cent of the children stunted in some districts of Uttar Pradesh to 15 per cent or lower in some Kerala districts.

The study, published on Thursday in the research journal Maternal and Child Nutrition, has suggested that economic factors, health and hygiene could explain the striking differences in stunting levels.

Low body mass among women explained 19 per cent of the differences in stunting levels across districts while low levels of education among women accounted for 12 per cent. The children's diet explained nine per cent of the differences.

Open defecation, young age at marriage, and poor antenatal care also influenced stunting levels.

Stunting refers to impaired growth and development in early childhood, which has long-term consequences such as poor learning abilities and a high risk for chronic nutrition-related diseases in adulthood.

"Strategies to address stunting should go beyond nutrition and diet for the children," said Purnima Menon, a senior research fellow at IFPRI India and the study's lead author.

"There should also be a focus on women's education and women's diet -- there's a gender angle that is important."

The study found that only 9.6 per cent of Indian children received adequate diet at the age of six months when they should be weaned from exclusive breastfeeding to complementary food.

"This is a distressing number. Exclusive breastfeeding rates have increased, but a vast majority of children at age six months and above still don't get adequate nutrition," Menon said.
