Bhopal: Reeling under drought sometime back, farmers in as many as 13 districts of the state are now bearing the brunt of floods and will have to resort to re-sowing of kharif crops.

The farmers are now waiting for overcast sky to clear up so that the waterlogged fields become accessible for re-sowing. Before the deluge, the sowing was already late and kharif crops could be sowed only on 85,000 hectares of land.

This year the target was 1,31,000 hectares, which was about 27,000 hectares more than the last year's kharif acreage. "Re-sowing would be required in about 18000 hectares of land, mainly in Bhopal, Hoshangabad , Sagar and Rewa divisions," said Rajesh Rajora, principal secretary, agriculture.

Disillusioned with successive failure of soya bean crop for the past few years, a large number of farmers this year distanced themselves from the oilseed, once considered as cash crop.

Till July 11, villages in 38 development blocks of the state in 13 districts including Damoh, Hoshangabad, Satna, Ashoknagar, Sagar, Sehore, Vidisha, Raisen Panna, Guna, Chhattarpur, Bhopal and Rajgarh have been identified where re-sowing will be required . Either seeds have been washed away or fields are waterlogged, leading to decaying of the seeds, said Dhirendra Mishra, a farmer in Damoh, the worst-affected district.
