CM writes to Modi, submits memorandum

Chennai:
The Tamil Nadu government has urged the Centre to sanction ?39,565 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund, and to release immediately Rs. 1,000 crore ‘on account’ to take up drought mitigation work in the state.

The state was hit by heavy floods in December 2015 and by Cyclone Vardah in December 2016. The State Disaster Response Fund is not sufficient to tackle the drought condition and it needs support from the National Fund, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said in a representation to the Centre.

Crops damage

The government has to provide relief to farmers for crops damage and supply drinking water in the face of the acute water scarcity, he said. In addition, support is needed for livestock feed and rural employment generation for farm workers, Panneerselvam said in a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister's Office along with a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tamil Nadu relies on the north-east monsoon from October to December for its water needs. The State received only 168 mm rainfall during the last north-east monsoon, a deficit of 62 per cent. The 32 districts in Tamil Nadu recorded a shortfall of 35 to 81 per cent. During the earlier south-west monsoon, the rainfall recorded was 20 per cent lower than the normal level.
