TIRUNELVELI: For the first time in the State, the Indian Red Cross Society’s Tirunelveli chapter has kicked off a novel initiative of collecting unused medicines from the public, segregating and stocking it in a pharmacy to be given strictly to the poor patients carrying prescriptions given by a qualified doctor.

After seeing a sizable quantity of valuable drugs remain unused in the shelves of his house and of his friends,’ the honorary secretary of IRCS – Tirunelveli Chapter, D.A. Prabhakar, and his friends decided to collect the unused medicines from the public to create a ‘Drug Bank.’

“We’ll not accept the drugs that have already crossed or nearing the ‘expiry date.’ The drugs being collected thus from the public will be kept in the pharmacy on the IRCS premises since it had to be handled by a qualified pharmacist. Only on producing the prescriptions given by qualified doctors, the medicines will be given to the poor free of cost,” said Mr. Prabhakar. Poor patients, who are unable to pay even the consultation fee, can meet the Red Cross Doctor and orthopaedic surgeon G. Ajit Inigo, who will be available on the IRCS premises during particular timings, get the prescription and drugs as well.

On hearing about this, a group of medical representatives have also joined hands with the IRCS. As the medical representatives meet on Sunday (January 3), they are expected to come out with an action plan on donating medicines for a range of ailments to the ‘Drug Bank,’ which was formally inaugurated by Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan on Saturday.

They also decided to meet the public along with the Indian Red Cross Society volunteers during the collection of drugs. Apart from giving medicines from the ‘Drug Bank’ free of cost to the poor patients coming to its premises, the IRCS has also decided to send the drugs required by the special schools, orphanages, home for the aged.

“We’ll send the drugs only on the requisition from the heads of these institutions,” said T. Manohar, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer, Tirunelveli.
