KOCHI: An extensive dry spell has affected the sowing of chilli, turmeric, cardamom and pepper.

Rains have been weak this season in southern states, where the spices are mostly grown.

Chilli acreage has fallen by over 40% in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which account for a majority of the spice cultivated in the country. Chilli farmers are finding cotton a better option as it needs less moisture. Interestingly, most growers had shifted to chilli last year when cotton prices plunged.

"Chilli is sown from the first week of July and sowing continues till August. But only 50% of the area has been sown in Andhra Pradesh. Low water levels in Tungabhadra, Krishna and Godavari have made irrigation difficult," said Ravipati Peraiah, MD of Vijayakrishna Spice Farms.

Though rains in the coming weeks can salvage the situation to an extent, around 40% drop in production is feared. Last year, there was a 20% rise in production which led to prices stabilising in the range of Rs 55-75 per kg.

As for turmeric, only 50% of sowing is over in Erode, the main growing region in the country. In Andhra Pradesh, sowing down by 20% to 30%. Turmeric had a bumper harvest last year with a record 110 lakh bags (each bag of 70 to 75 kg) against 40 lakh bags in the previous year. "There is a carry-forward stock of 50 lakh bags which may hold the price line if production falls," said RV Ravishanker, president of Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Cardamom growers are expecting a 40% shortfall in production due to the absence of backup showers. "Though this is the harvest time, arrivals from the current crop are marginal. Of the 65 tonne coming for auctions, around 60 tonne are from old stocks," said P C Punnoose, general manager of Cardamom Processing and Marketing Co-operative Society.

Pepper crops are also in trouble over inadequate rains. "Unless we get continuous rains in the coming days, the output will be quite low," said major pepper exporter Kishor Shamji.
