In an attempt to crackdown on speculators and hoarders within the country, suspected to be in league with international operators in driving up the prices of pulses and other food items, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken up the investigation of the Rs 250-crore pulses scam with the agency questioning Naresh Jain, an alleged associate of international don Dawood Ibrahim.

Jain was last month arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with his alleged involvement in financial transactions related to narcotics smuggling to US and some European countries. He is also alleged to be the anchor behind the pulses scam that was unearthed in 2007 when prices of the food item first started rising abnormally.

Cornered by a united opposition on food inflation, with prices of pulses having gone up by more than 45% in the last one year, the government has put its investigative arms to crackdown on hoarders and scamsters behind jacking up prices of pulses and other food items.

Investigators from ED questioned Jain recently on the pulses scam which was earlier probed by CBI and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Sources said the accused told ED officials about the transactions in the pulses scam and involvement of some of the country's big rice exporters.

The accused hawala kingpin, who operated from Dubai and was allegedly involved in transferring funds of Dawood Ibrahim.
