Kota (Rajasthan): The level of education among tribal children is dismal in the state, a survey has found. The reasons are the lack of awareness about the importance of education and their nomadic nature.

The Kota Heritage Society, a voluntary organisation, conducted the survey on the educational status of nomadic and denotified tribes of Rajasthan. The Indian Council of Social Science Research of the Union human resource development ministry has given a grant for the project.

Madan Meena, state coordinator of the survey, told HT that the sample survey started in September last year and would conclude in April this year. They studied the educational status of children of nomadic and denotified tribes in 20 districts of the state. They would study some more districts soon. He said the survey showed the high school dropout rate (80%) among these children. School enrolment was minimal among children of nomadic tribes due to their nomadic nature.

"Lack of awareness among parents about education and the habit of pushing children into traditional work appeared to be a reason for the poor educational level," he said. Children of Sansi community were engaged in their family's profession of preparing country made liquor, while Kanjar community pushed adolescent girls into prostitution, the survey found.

These children have access to educational programmes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, but there are several problems. "Landlessness, social discrimination, backwardness, poverty, nomadic nature of the tribes and several other aspects were responsible for poor educational level," he said. The districts surveyed so far included Kota, Bundi, Baran, Jhalawar, Bharatpur, Karauli, Swai Madhopur, Bhilwara, Tonk, Jodhpur, Nagaur, and Hanumangarh.

He said the objective of the sample survey is to study educational level of children of these tribes for their rehabilitation and educational improvement. The survey report would be submitted to the ICSSR after April this year, he said. He said about 30 surveyors from these tribes have conducted the sample survey.
