The Samajwadi Party's resounding victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls is certain to add more heft to the Federal Front - the alliance of non-Congress, non-BJP chief ministers put together by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's party was handed a decisive mandate by the electorate, and it will not have to be dependent on Congress, or any other party for its survival.

The snub by voters in UP, Punjab and Goa is bad news for Congress, and the government led by it at the Centre, which has been battling legislative and administrative paralysis. In Uttarakhand, it could not take full advantage of the anti-incumbency handicap suffered by BJP.

The dismal performance is likely to strengthen the federal front, which comprises the CMs of Bihar, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, besides West Bengal. TDP chief N Chandrababu, now on a comeback trail in Andhra Pradesh, is also a member of this front.

The group showed its clout when it forced the home ministry to defer the formation of the National Counter-terrorism Centre (NCTC) on the ground that such an agency would have encroached upon the turf of the states.

While the elections to the Rajya Sabha, to be held next month, is likely to see UPA lose further ground, in the Lok Sabha, the government has been forced to put up with the opposition from the Trinamool Congress, the most important ally of Congress.

The position taken by Banerjee on FDI in multi-brand retail, the Lokpal Bill and, now, NCTC, has forced the government to put the issues on the backburner.

Like the TMC, SP too is strongly opposed to foreign investment in multi-brand retail. The UPA government can now say goodbye to any attempt to resurrect the proposal. It is also unlikely that it'll succeed in securing the passage of PFRDA Bill, which is being opposed by Trinamool.

The Centre's efforts to get the states to agree to a GST roll-out by the beginning of next fiscal is also expected to hit a roadblock.
