After death and destruction following mudslides, comes the fear of waterborne diseases in Leh. Doctors have reported a steady rise in the cases of gastroenteritis due to contaminated drinking water. They have also found symptoms of cholera and typhoid.

Central relief agencies, including DRDO, have sent biochemical water filters, portable testing kits and chlorine tablets to the inhabitants. "There is no proper drainage system in Leh. Potable water has been polluted by the slush, dead bodies and decayed matter all around. We fear spread of epidemic such as cholera, typhoid and gastroenteritis," said DRDO's chief controller, research and development, Dr W Selvamurthy.

Doctors at Sonam Norboo Memorial Government Hospital are advising people to drink only boiled water. "We have installed camps where chlorine tablets are being distributed," said Selvamurthy.

Doctors say even cases of post-traumatic disorder (PTD) are rising. However, there are just two trained counsellors to deal with such patients. "We have engaged two trained counsellors. But communicating with patients in the local language is a big problem. They can communicate only with the help of local translators. PTD can only be managed by psychologists, and there aren't many in the region," said Dr Thunchok Sering, medical superintendent, SNM Hospital.
