More than 96,000 cases of food adulteration are pending in various courts in the country and there is no check on the violators as the Prevention of Food and Adulteration Act proves to be ineffective as its main focus is on the detection of adulteration. The point was discussed at a state-level conference of food processing industries’ association here on Sunday.

P Kartikein, Assistant Director, Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI), who was the guest speaker, told the industrialists that adulteration was rampant in the food products and the Food Standard and Safety Act 2010 would be implemented by January 2011 to check this. He said the Act had been notified but a few rules and regulations were yet to be framed.

A R Sharma, Chairman, Ricela Group of Industries, and member, Expert Committee (Fat and Oil), FSSAI, said: “The new Act will focus not on detection but on prevention through good manufacturing practice. Under this Act, every vendor and shopkeeper will have to be registered with the FSSAI. For small players, it will be simple registration while the big players will need a licence. Those not getting themselves registered will face prosecution while registrations will be cancelled if the norms are not followed.”

The new Act will be simplified and controlled by one body, instead of the existing system where many departments are managing the food processing rules and regulations.

The speakers said adulteration at times started from the farming level while in some other stages it was at the manufacturing level, too.

More than 100 participants attended the seminar, said H P S Lamba, general secretary of the association.
