BHUBANESWAR: Effective leveraging of agriculture is the key to ensuring food and nutrition security. This can be achieved by taking steps to ensure that technological intervention in farms is done with agreement of farmers.

This was one of the key points made by a panel of experts at a forum on ‘Farming System for Nutrition (FSN) initiative in Koraput', conducted by MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) here on Monday.

MSSRF has undertaken a project to demonstrate the feasibility of FSN approach for pro-nutrition agriculture and asses its impact on nutrition status of the population.

The initiative is under a research programme for ‘Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia' (LANSA). The project is being taken up on a pilot basis in a cluster of seven villages of Boipariguda block in Koraput district, said RV Bhavani, Project Manager LANSA.

A panel of eminent speakers discussed several issues related to public policy, sanitation, water, health, agricultural production, and sustainability.

"The essential components which complement nutrition awareness are, farming system interventions, awareness on importance of nutritious food, health and hygiene, care of pregnant woman and infant, child feeding practices, water, sanitation and facilitating access to entitlements under Government programmes," said MS Swaminathan, Chairman MSSRF.

Plans pertaining to development of fishery, animal husbandry and poultry were also discussed. Training ‘youth core groups' in the tribal belt of Koraput can encourage elderly take up secondary sources of farming for sustenance and trade, said the delegates.

"The purpose of FSN is to demonstrate the feasibility of pro-nutrition agriculture interventions, which will impact nutrition status of the population in terms of total calorie intake," added Bhavani.

Among others, Ajay Parida, Executive Director MSSRF, VP Singh, Research Director LANSA and representatives from UNICEF, NABARD, Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) and Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI) were present.
