Asks Centre to clarify steps taken to sanction funds

The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday directed the Centre to explain by March 9 the steps it had taken with respect to a plea made by the State government last month to sanction Rs. 39,565 crore from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to provide relief to farmers since all the 32 districts in the State had been declared drought-affected.

Justices A. Selvam and P. Kalaiyarasan directed Central Government Standing Counsel D. Saravanan to ascertain the Centre’s view while hearing a public interest litigation petition which sought a relief package of Rs. 50,000 per acre of farm land to every farmer in the State. During the course of hearing, Special Government Pleader M. Govindan said that a plea for funds was pending with the Centre.

The SGP also said that so far 17 farmers had died in the State due to drought. Wondering whether the official figures reflected the ground reality, Mr. Justice Selvam said: “You are saying that just 17 people have died so far while the television channels have been telecasting news stories of farmer deaths almost every day for the last three months. Please tell us the true figures. We witness deaths every day.”
