NEW DELHI: Agriculture and jobs will form the focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's discussions on Tuesday with top economists and experts from India and abroad at a time the government has been criticised for the country's 'jobless growth'.

The theme of the Niti Aayog meeting is 'Economic policy: The road ahead', but the PM has asked the premier government thinktank to concentrate on two areas: agriculture and education, skills and jobs.

The high-level meeting, to be attended by finance minister Arun Jaitley, Niti Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya, secretary-level officials and noted outside experts, comes at a time critics of the government's demonetisation move have argued that the decision has slowed down the economy.

Before the meeting with PM Modi in the evening, the economist and experts will have a brainstorming session on the two subjects with secretaries handling ministries like commerce, economic affairs, revenue, rural development and agriculture. With just over a month remaining for the Modi government's third budget, the PM will also seek experts' opinion on what it should focus on.

"This is part of the annual exercise Niti Aayog has been doing and the purpose is to look ahead at the policy roadmap for the remainder of the present term of the government," Panagariya told TOI.

Among those likely to attend the meeting are Vivek Dehejia, economics professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada; Pravin Krishna, economics professor at Johns Hopkins University, USA; former director of NIPFP (National Institute of Public Finance and Policy) Govind Rao; Credit Suisse managing director Neelkant Mishra; Madhav Chavan of Pratham and former finance secretary Sumit Bose.

Agriculture experts Vijay Paul Sharma, chairman of commission for agricultural costs and prices (CACP), and Prof Sukhpal Singh, both from IIM-Ahmedabad, will also be present in the meeting along with NK Singh, Surjit Bhalla, Niti Aayog members Ramesh Chand, Bibek Debroy and VK Saraswat and its CEO Amitabh Kant.
